No 8 Chambers is
delighted to announce that it has received an entry in the current edition
of Chambers and Partners. The entry reads:
Undoubtedly the
leading set in the Midlands for
immigration and associated areas, this set handles the full range of
disparate matters that come under the immigration heading. Its caseload is
comprised mostly of personal immigration and asylum cases, although it does
appear on a small percentage of cases involving the business side.
Interviewees acknowledge head of chambers Abid Mahmood as an expert in up-to-date court
developments and “someone who, as well as being an excellent lawyer,
has great inter-personal skills.” He enjoys a leading reputation for
his work on behalf of Sudanese refugees. He acted on the landmark Court of
Appeal case AH (Sudan) and Others v Secretary of State for the Home
Department, confirming that the claimant could not be forced to return to
Sudan even if internally relocated to Khartoum and away from the
well-reported troubles in Darfur. He is now also a part-time immigration
judge in London.
Over half of Stephen Vokes’ work is now privately
paying, taking in anything from family reunion issues to work permits and
assistance to foreign students. Issues addressed include whether refugees
should be entitled to indefinite leave to remain, or to only five years as
the government proposes. He advises on peripheral terrorist cases, looking
at whether terrorist suspects should be granted recognition. Years of
experience have led him to be highly regarded, with solicitors noting that
“he comes across very well in court and gets his points over,”
especially on legally complex or unusual cases. Clients are said to
“absolutely adore his dedication to a case.” Sources commend Adam Pipe’s “conscientious approach” and
commitment to this area. “He is a safe pair of hands who understands
the law.”
